How To: Tie a Necktie
For being a site that solely believes and thrives off of neckwear accessories, it seems only natural and educational that we break down some of the most popular ways to tie a tie.
Tying a tie is sort of like a coming of age skill. It is something men learn as they get older, either through a family member, friend, YouTube or even a blog like this! With so many different ways to tie a tie (that differ for bow ties and neckties), it’s hard to sometimes know which type of knot is appropriate, stylish and even accurate.
Well, here at NecktiesInStock, we’re always looking out for our customers; so here are three popular and appropriate ways (in 5 steps or less) to tie a tie for a variety of different occasions (The knots are called: Four-In-Hand, Full Windsor and Pratt – Shelby for reference).
Four-In-Hand
This knot is very popular, easy and good for both casual and formal occasions.
Step 1: With the tie around your neck, have the wide end on the right and the narrow end on the left. Pull the narrow end down around your neck so that its length is just above your belly-button.
Step 2: Cross the wide end over to the narrow end, and then under it on the left side and then bring it right back to the right side.
Step 3: After that, bring the wide end across the front of the tie and then back on your left.
Step 4: Bring the wide end up through the loop that is around your neck (coming from the underneath), and then immediately down through the loop you have just created in front of your neck.
Step 5: Tighten and adjust the knot around your neck until you are comfortable and you are good to go!
Full Windsor
Best worn with a wide spread collared shirt, the Full Windsor is an excellent option for more formal occasions, such as: weddings, business meetings and other special events.
Step 1: With the tie around your neck, have the wide end on the right and the narrow end on the left. Pull the narrow end down around your neck so that its length is just above your belly-button.
Step 2: Cross the wide end over to the narrow and then bring it to the left side, up into the neck loop (coming from underneath).
Step 3: Once through the neck loop, bring the wide side down and towards the left before bringing it around the back of the narrow end and to the right.
Step 4: Proceed by bringing the wide end up to the center and bring it through your neck loop and pull down to the right before immediately crossing it over your front to the left side and then through the loop you just created in front.
Step 5: Tighten and adjust the knot around your neck until you are comfortable and you are good to go!
Pratt (Shelby)
Also best showcased with a wide spread collared shirt, the Pratt or “Shelby” knot is a classic for business and formal occasions.
Step 1: Starting with the tie around your neck (inside out) – with the wide end underneath the narrow end.
Step 2: Bring the wide end over and then under the narrow end, then pull and tighten the loop you have created.
Step 3: Bring the wide end over to the left and pull it up behind the loop you have created.
Step 4: Then bring that same wide end through the knot and tighten and adjust until you are comfortable and you are good to go!
